Spaces
Crossroads is a composite of Colonial Revival splendor, Bohemian eclecticism, contemporary subversion, symbolic meaning, and advanced technology.
It is a cohesion defined by diversity – of space, proportion, geometry, and life on the street.
Fully accessible to 500 people at full capacity, Crossroads is an urban catalyst and invigorating force, supporting community, artistry, discovery, dialogue, and provocative thought.
The Frequency
Located at street level, The Frequency creates a dynamic visual extension of Haight Street’s urban flow, day and night. The historic storefronts that house it will be preserved as seen from the street, but inside combined to create an intimate live performance venue for 75 - 100 guests. A gracious lobby and enlarged sidewalk with parklet will provide queuing space to minimize street congestion at showtime.
The multipurpose venue will feature state-of-the-art acoustics, lighting, and immersive video and serve as home to our signature performances, programs, and events.
The Portal
Rising above The Frequency, The Portal will be a two-story flexible event space with a standing capacity of over 200 guests. A long exterior balcony will connect it to the street scene below. Above the balcony and facing Haight Street will be an extraordinary ceramic and glass façade, a visual expression of the sound of this historic neighborhood realized through rich and layered cymatics – naturally occurring vibrational patterns.
From community dances to mind-blowing projection mapped concerts, performance arts to TEDx-style talks, theater works to neighborhood film nights, The Portal will host a broad range of energies and activities. This new addition will also serve as a generous exhibit space that will communicate with the galleries in the adjoining Doolan-Larson house.
Gathering Grounds
Adjacent to the Frequency, the corner storefronts will be thoughtfully modified to create a sequence of interconnected spaces. Framed by their beams, columns, and old-world detailing, these spaces will comprise a welcoming community Café and adjoining Salon. The Salon will be flexibly employed as either an extension of the Café or an intimate, independent event space.
Think evocative conversation, open mics, acoustic troubadours, hipster jazz combos, poetry readings, and more. An inviting Haight Street parklet will expand the vibes to the great outdoors.
Music and Mind
The venerable Doolan-Larson house will be transformed into generative exhibit and gallery spaces we call Music & Mind. The character of Norm Larson’s storied salon rooms will remain at once intact and repurposed utilizing innovative technology to enhance experiences within them with minimal physical intervention.
Music and Mind will ambitiously explore arts and counterculture, shining a light on San Francisco’s supernova impact on music and socio-cultural movements alike.
In collaborations with curators, artists, and next-gen creators, we’ll produce interactive installations, cutting edge displays, and unique sonic landscapes to nourish the imagination.
The Heights
Perched four levels above the street in Doolan -Larson’s historic attic, The Heights will become an intimate community learning lab and creation studio for up to 49 guests. Employing the latest tools for audio, video, and interactive design, our seasoned mentors will teach budding storytellers, filmmakers, and musicians the skills to give voice to their imaginations. Their work will in turn fuel dynamic exhibit content and performances on the floors below.
The woody sonic space will double as a haven for focused listening sessions of classic recordings and music history discussions, welcoming students, neighborhood enthusiasts, artists, and professionals alike.
